Fortress of Berzé
About
The largest castle in Burgundy
A family property, built by the ancestors of the current owners to protect the abbey of Cluny, Berzé overlooks a superb panorama of the vineyards of the Solutré valley. Built from the 11th to the 15th century around its Carolingian chapel, this castle has preserved its entire defensive system, thirteen towers including two keeps, its impressive entrance châtelet and its medieval rooms.
It is thus the most important and best preserved fortress in Burgundy.
The castle has three enclosures. Each of them contains various gardens, orchards, vegetable gardens, a formal garden with its boxwoods, statues, bowers and large yews cut into chess pieces. From the top of its terraces, the view is splendid over the Lamartinien Valley with its vineyards in the background.
Hollywood location of "The Last Duel" with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Adam. Driver and Jodie Cormier by Ridley Scott.
During the season, the tavern offers refreshments, ice cream, waffles and snacks from 10:00 to 18:00!
