Saint-Denis Church
About
Massy is a hamlet in the village of La Vineuse-sur-Frégande, nestling in a valley with a stream running through it. The name Massy is mentioned in 904 in a Cluny charter as "villa MACIACUS", the domain of MACIACUS, a word formed from the Roman surname MACIUS followed by the Gallic suffix "-acus".
Built on the site of the former chapel of Saint-Martin (of which a few remains remain in the apse), the church was given the title of Saint-Denis when it was presented to the monks of Cluny.
It is one of the oldest early Romanesque churches in the Clunisois region, mentioned in the Cluny cartulary in 932 and 1156.
