Spectacular vista point, worth the detour. The Roche de Solutré escarpment rises to 495 metres." A spectacular limestone cliff, situated amongst the vineyards of the Mâconnais region. The rock outcroppings at Solutré-Pouilly, Vergisson and Mont Pouilly are part of natural sites members of the Grands Sites de France. At the base of the Solutré Rock, the "Crot-du-Charnier" outcropping contains thousands of prehistoric horse fossils, along with many artefacts, engraved silex and stones, dated back to civilisations ranging from the Aurignacian era to the Magdalenian era (28,000 to 10,000 B.C.), and notably during the period referred to as the "Solutrean era". Hike to the summit (45 min. up and back).
